Rating
4/5 – Beginner Guitar System is a great way to nail the fundamentals of playing and pick up the basics of the most popular genres, but sites like Guitar Tricks and JamPlay can take you much further with your playing.
Pros:
- Clearly explained, beginner-focused lessons.
- More affordable than subscription sites.
- Linear lessons from a likeable teacher.
- Use of multiple camera angles so you can see what both hands should be doing.
- Everything you need to know to get started with the guitar.
- Option to access content online instead.
Cons:
- Little to offer intermediate players, and nothing for advanced level.
- Less detailed genre and skill lessons than other courses.
- No extra tools – aside from a CD metronome.
Lesson Format
The lessons are linear, taking you on a step by step journey from being an absolute beginner to being able to get out and play with a band or learn your favorite songs. The DVDs start with the basics of holding and using your guitar and move right through to music theory and playing along with songs. The three CDs contain the play along tracks from the two concluding DVDs without the guitar parts. The workbook supplements the main lessons, and is invaluable for reference.
Community
Unlike DVD course Learn and Master Guitar, Beginner Guitar System doesn’t offer support in the form of an interactive community. However, forums for guitarists are widespread, so you’ll still be able to find help online if you’re stuck.
Customer Support
The course is simplistic to use and comes as physical CDs, workbooks and DVDs (or is easily accessed online) – so no support is really needed. There is a customer service team if you do have any questions about delivery or gaining access to the content online.
Bonus Tools
Aside from the jam-along CDs (including metronome tracks), you don’t get any additional extras with the Beginner Guitar System.
Conclusion
There may be more comprehensive options around, but you receive a complete beginners’ package with Beginner Guitar System. Realistically, the course is much better suited to those with a relaxed attitude to learning who don’t want to be overwhelmed with superfluous content.
